Pull in the clutch, and with the motor stopped, attempt to shift into first while pushing the bike back and forth a few feet and see if it drops into first easily.

If it does, than all is normal, many motorcycle transmissions are reluctant to go into first at a stop. The trick is to shift into first before you come to a full stop.

If the bike refuses to shift to first while it is moving then you have a problem.

Sorry.... It's just hard to know a posters experience level, so I just start out with the basics...

Slipping out of second gear under full throttle upshifts from rounded off engagement dogs is common, but I've never heard of a complete refusal to go into first. :umm::surprise:

Maybe someone else will chime in.

Good luck

Me neither. Sounds like a broken gear box...or at least the 1 gear is out.

Well, being that you're experienced and know how to operate a bike I'd venture to say that you have a clutch, or shifter adjustment issue, or probably a shifting fork that's fugged.

I'm wondering why anyone would buy a bike that couldn't be shifted into first gear  I think you can get a great tranny job for around $2K, if you can do it yourself much cheaper.
