I have owned my K3 Bus for about five years. It has always had an oil leak. Last week i decided to have a go at fixing it. I bought a new rocker cover gasket and fitted it. On replacing the rocker cover bolts i noticed the two rear outer bolts would not tighten, courtesy of the previous owner. My local bike shop helicoiled the offending items and i set about putting it all back together. I fitted a new rocker cover gasket, re-connected the plug connectors, fuel pipe, throttle and choke cable bolted on the fuel tank and reconnected the battery. I turned on the ignition (no choke) and pressed the starter. The motor instantly reved out to about 10,000 revs...to say it scared me is an understatement, hit the kill switch. I tried it again with the throttle cables and chokr disconnected, exactley the same. The shop that did the work removed the cam carriers to drill the holes, is it possible they may have done something. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated...thanks David.

Anything to do with the cam would cause them to go out of time. So if they did something wrong there, your motor would not reach 10k rpm or would grenade trying to get there.
I did not see in your list that you reconnected the camshaft position sensor. This would be a long shot, but could be the culprit if it were forgotten. More than likely I would expect to find a major vacuum leak or possibly a fuel leak (like an injector sticking open). These would be the first places I would look.

No question, take it straight back to that dealer. I would have called as soon as it happened.

Thanks for the reply, the dealer in question is coming over tomorrow night. The sticking injector is an interesting theory and it would make sense to. The bike prior to being started again had not been run since last september. Forgive my ignorance, but how do I check if an injector is stuck, and how would I go about un sticking it...thanks again David.

Cables routed properly?

Typically you replace a sticking injector with a new or reman unit.

If you want to try to clean injectors off the vehicle (bike, car, truck, boat, etc...) you would have to pull the rail with the injectors attached. Make sure that the injectors will stay in the rail when pressurized. Have a catch can for each injector, preferably a clear jar or graduated cylinder. A fuel pump with cleaning solution that is safe for the injectors, meaning you don't want to run pure acetone, for example, as that will eat the internal seals. I would probably run something like a 1:1 mix of B12 and gasoline (gallon of each) with an inline filter (would have to be rated for fuel injection) so you can reuse the cleaning solution and run it through several times.

"kml666 Cables routed properly?"
Not a likely possibility as the problem still occurred with the cables detached.

" the dealer in question is coming over tomorrow night."
But we will see what the verdict is when the dealer takes a look at it.
