Hey guys...Been doing some touring on my busa and was not happy with the gps mounts available out there, so i came up with this one. It's cnc machined from billet aluminum, comes in three pieces (center console mount and two fork clamps), all hardware is stainless steel...Lets you see all ur gages nice and clear, you can reach and use all the gps features really easy, and if i may say so looks pretty damn cool. I am going to start designing them for other gps units in the near future...let me know what you guys think, I'm always open for suggetions on improving my stuff...and if you are interested in purchasing one, drop me an email at chrisandbev2002@yahoo.ca . I have more pics of the units as well and am more than willing to email them...thanks for readin...

Get the design and price for a Garmin and if it's reasonable I'd be interested. That looks like professional work and I'm sure you would have many orders.

Beautiful work!!!
The only thing I can see is that you wouldn't see it if you had a tank bag on. I know I just see my zumo on its 4" ram mount.
Sweet idea though. Makes everything nice and clean looking.
Cheers,
Tony

Take this suggestion seriously my man. You are on to something with this, but you have to protect yourself. You have already messed up by showing it publicly. If you have any documentation demonstrating when you started working on it, save it. And at least look into what it would cost to get a patent filing started. My guess is about $1,200-$2,000, but i'm not sure.

Great looking work and a great idea! I agree with the other fellas about the patent idea.

That's a very good idea and look so cool. If I only had TomTom I would go for it for sure :thumbs up:
Yeap and I agree with fellas. If you don't want to loose your project better spend some $$$ on patenting it. You could really make some real $$$ on doing it

First to answer some of ur questions....1) Yes my bike is lowered, allowing me to clamp this unit to the protion of the forks sticking thru the triple clamp. 2) The unit itself is not water proof...but i have found when riding thru rain that this part of the bike gets minimal water, so i haven't had a problem yet...also the unit comes off the bike in literally 10 seconds if you do need to remove it. 3) As for patent protection, i did speak to a patent lawyer and unfortuanatly something like this does not fall under a patentable product because it is mearly a different take on an existing product and not significantly different to justify a patent. So i will just make them for those who want to buy from me and go from there. And by the looks of it I need to make for an i-phone next...lol. I'll get to work. again thanks guys, the input is much appreciated.

Man....I don't buy that. this product is a different take on what.......a top clamp, or a stem stand holder? It has a different (ar additional purpoose from a typical top clamp. And it is a drastic improvement on a stem stand in terms of location, profile, and possibly security.
I am not a lawyer of any type, but I have dealt with patents as a Product Manager for technical products. Plus I have studied patents while getting my MBA.
There are 3 basic requirements for a patent:
1. NOVEL-An invention is not patentable if it is known or used or described in a publication........This idea is certainly new. Stem stand holders exist, but nothing like this has ever been used.
2. NONOBVIOUS-An invention is not patentable if it is obvious to a person with ordinary skill. I don't think this is obvious, but that may be a point of discussion.
3. USEFUL-An invention must be useful. Clearly tis is useful.
The lawyer you spoke with may have been referring to the following:
The subject matter sought to be patented must be sufficiently different from what has been used or described before that it may be said to be nonobvious to a person having ordinary skill in the area of technology related to the invention. For example, the substitution of one color for another, or changes in size, are ordinarily not patentable.
In my opinion, your product is sufficiantly different from a normal top clamp and is sufficiently different from any display holder previously introduced. But even if someone had tried to do this before, it is still possible to get a patent on a product that is an improvement on something else. So that is also a possibility.
There is a window of opportunity for you. You must apply for a patent within 1 year of selling the product commercially. If you are not sure about the product, you do have the abilility to file a provisional patent application. The PPA is simpler, shorter, and cheaper. But protection only lasts for 1 year.
Again, I am not an expert, but if I were you I wouldn't give up so fast. Shiat......try to take it to the OEM's (Suzuki, Yamaha, etc). If they design it into the top clamp in the 1st place, it might eliminate the need to lower the bike. But protect yourself 1st.

How much do you have to lower the bike in order to use this?
2)....also the unit comes off the bike in literally 10 seconds if you do need to remove it.
I would not like a unit that comes off so easily. T -H-E-F-T would be my concern. I don't want to have to remove the thing everytime I go into a restaurant or gas station......just a thought. But I love it man.

Hey again guys...a few more answers here....the clamps for this unit are 1/2" tall so you would have to lower the bike enough to get 1/2" of fork to stick thru the top clamp. As for security, the unit comes off fast and easy if you have the right allen key with you...if not it is bolted to the bike much like any other piece of equipment... And i am still looking into the patent and have all my documentation so if it does look like it may go thru i am covered....the lawyers are workin on it..lol

For those who will not lower their bike, I recommend mounting it like a techmount in the large hole in the middle of the top triple clamp (see techmount pic - BASE PIN ONLY). If it fits on the top of the triple clam very low profile, then you could have a broad base to work with and you can put a Garmin GPS (waterproof) on one side and an iphone on the other with adjustable angles so its easier to view depending on conditions and preference. Here's a rough drawing of what I am taking about. I would buy this! All black of course.

Very nice. I want one! All I would say is it would be nice if the GPS flipped up some (adjustible) so it's not perpendicular to the sun and in the event that you are trying to read it in the rain.
Get some cool finishes and you are onto something. Forget the patent thing though. Takes too long and it's too easy to copy stuff like that without too much problems. You need to get a market for it and sell as many as you can before someone else starts competing.

I agree with those above, even if you don't want to go through marketing and manufacturing these items yourself the "Idea" itself is worth alot and will be taken if you don't protect it.
BTW i would think about using aluminium, some of those aluminium alloys are insanely tough material, but this is beautiful work and looks really professionally done. if i get myself a waterproof gps i would want something like this that seems an original part of the bike.
