You said it LOUD!!!
I don't know if it will damage anything but, I fired my 08' up with no cans while I was in the middle of my R77 install and WOW it was loud.
I'm with Tybalt, better hold off till you get your exhaust.

The "mid-pipe".....which connects the header tip to the cans, is still on the bike. You can see the mid-pipe baffle in the 1st pic. Now when you remove that mid-pipe too....then it's LOUD . :oh yeah:

I was told that the lack of back pressure can affect and possibly damage the engine.
I'm not a mechanic, but if Suzuki engineered these speed demons, with the stock header & cans in place, something could go wrong when it's messed with to that extreme.

i ran my bike with no cans and it felt slower down low but felt quicker up top. not worth the headache and unwanted attention

I am running without the cans on my 99 but I left the midpipe, welded in a baffle I cut in half from a harley sporster in the midpipe and then put a "tip" on the end from advanced motor parts by drilling the underside of the midpipe and running the screw into the "tip" like you would a car. I cost about 25$ but is sounds great but not so loud that I get the attention of the:copcar: been running mine for about 2 years like that with no problems or awards for exhaust from the blue lights

on our 04 drag bike we are running a 4-2-1 header with no can. it wont hurt anything. drag bikes run no cans all day everyday and they are put to the test more than most street bikes! we don't even run the mid pipe. it isnt really for performance, it's only bc a can would hit the swingarm. it is really loud but thats all. and i really don't beleive the loss of power thing. you may have but i still dont beleive you. granted we do have a little more motor than your street bike and a power commander tuned for the bike but we didnt lose any power.

Landjet, would you expand a little more on what you did please? Any pics? Especially the part where you get a harley baffle and cut it in half; lengthwise, widthwise, description or part number if any? Also more info on the tip from advanced motor parts too please?

sure man no problem, sorry I took so long to reply.....been working nights lately:head meets wall: anyways I took a baffle that fit a harley sportster 99+ (I had one in the garage for some odd reason) and actually just crammed it in as far as it would go and marked it with a sharpie. pulled it out and cut it on the line. put it back in and just put 3 SMALL tack welds on it to the INSIDE of the midpipe. this will give you a little back pressure which won't kill top end. I then just went to advanced auto parts and picked out a chrome "tip" I liked (slash cut) and pointed it down toward the ground which will also quiet it down a little but still leave the "growl" your looking for. marke the little hole on the tip to the inside of the pipe with my sharpie and drilled it out. then just put in a self tapping screw with a little locktite on it and your good to go!:thumbs up:

Thanks for the reply. How much attention does it draw? Do cops stop their conversation to watch you pass by? My last bike (02 Gixxer 750) did with stock exhaust, very uncomfortable feeling. In fact, I just sold it last thursday to a kid and it got impounded that night and he was awarded a bunch of fix it tickets; no reflector, non-DOT approved front blinkers (flush mounted), etc. I want it louder but I also like it that cops don't give me a second look. I think I'll stick with stock for now. I'm too chicken to get my bike impounded. I'll be lost without it.
