Pretty cool test but I would've thought the db level would've been much higher without the cans.

i found this very interesting so i decided to take of the factory cans and leave the stubs as is just to see if it was too loud to ride....to my surprise it was not...i have seen the after market slip ons and thought that they were strange looking to say the least, but after feeling the exhaust all but removed ( who doesnt hate the factory cans) i am pleased to say that i will be going to a "straight" pipe.
Power Commander III USB w/LCD should be here by the end of the week...will post pics during and after the install

I ran my K8 without the stock cans the night I was doing the R77 install and it sounded awesome, but seeing how I had just dropped a $1000 on the slip ons I went ahead and put them on.

Increases in decibel (db) levels:
It needs to be realized that when a decibel reading increases by just 3 db (as when 103 db increases to 106 db), it isn’t simply an increase of “a unit of 3” (as in, “I had 103 dollars and now I have 106 dollars”).
Rather, for every increase of 3 db, the power of whatever is being measured in decibels has increased two-fold (has been doubled). Likewise, every decrease in 3 db indicates a reduction in power by 2 (just half as much power). So, the 126.9 db registered WITHOUT the mufflers compared to the roughly 118.9 db WITH the mufflers resulted in an increase in audio power of 8 db, which is just short of a quadrupling of the audio noise power level, which does no one any good.
Since human hearing detects these audio power increases in a non-linear manner (actually, logarithmically), we don’t necessarily perceive the audio level increase of 103 db to 106 db as a “doubling of the audio output level”, but in fact, the audio power level HAS been doubled, as is measurable with the appropriate db gauge. You just need to comprehend the values that db represent in order to appreciate their true meaning and usefulness.
Additionally, once a db level of sufficient power has been achieved, the human ear becomes saturated and can no longer differentiate ANY further increases in db level. This is what makes loud noises so potentially damaging. We only hear loud noises up to a given level and then our ears become deaf, dumb, and essentially useless as a gauge for determining any further increases in audio output levels.
Summarizing:
It may sound cool without the mufflers, but if you value your hearing and wish to retain its good function for the remainder of your life, I suggest putting mufflers of some kind on the exhaust pipes. In all likelihood, your neighbors will certainly appreciate it. Naturally, you may do as you please, as it’s not my hearing that’s at stake. I am merely your informative messenger.

That was very interesting thank you. Riding my K8 Busa today I noticed that whilst ideling there is a lot of low frequency sound from the exhaust and actually very loud. Can you comment on this?
