View Full Version : What's your choice of gas stations?

OK, if this has been covered extensively, please accept my apologies up front.
What brand of gas does everyone prefer in their rides? I have a buddy who will only run Shell or Sunoco gas in his bike.
I've been thinking about it because my V6 cage usually get's 24-26mpg on the freeway drive to the mother-in-law's house. This past weekend, I filled up with Shell gas for the same trip and got just under 22mpg. And this time I actually set the cruise control for 75mph, instead of the usual rate of 85mph. I've had similar results with BP gas. Usually get the best results with Speedway gas. It's gotta be the gas...
Is there somewhere to look up which stations have the lowest ethanol content?

PETRO CANADA up here north of the border has the least ethanol content. Me , I follow a certain rule of thumb religiously : if i am less then 1/4 of a tank, thats my indicator to go fill up, always!!!!!, i dont like to get caught out with low fuel, I use any gas station, i just use SUPER. I know that even with inflated gas prices that $20 cdn will get me a nite/ride out easily. works for me, i dont really care about MPG, I pay for my sin/hobby/passion
FYI, I dont smoke or drink so i indulge in my hayabusas.

Generally I stick with Shell here is the north.. 87 all the way.... if I
do engine mods then I may go higher... from what I have read up
on with peeps in the know, they say that the higher octane fuel
burns more slowly... resulting in less power.. so unless I go NOS or
Turbo or Big bore I will just stick with the 87 for now unless someone
shows me there is a serious threat with 87 on a stock motor.

+1 on that. to the OP, there are millions of factors that can impact your gas mileage. don't get caught up that it's the "gas".

You know, I have nothing substantial to back up my opinion/belief. (other than multiple comparisons in multiple vehicles of my own) That aside, I've had guys in the service department of Dodge, Honda, Subaru, Pontiac, Infinity, and a couple race shops all tell me to never run BP gas. Something about the cleaners and other things they add to the fuel not being good for the fuel systems.
I had a 1987 Firebird that got BP gas exclusively from about 80K miles to 140K miles because I got the best mileage with that gas. Then I had to replace half the fuel lines and other various crap and the mechanic showed me where the lines were basically eaten from the inside out. I've taken 2 Pontiacs and a Dodge to 200K since then with very few problems and I avoid BP gas like the plague.
I know I'm going to get flamed for this post, so again I'll say... no substantial proof or evidence of cause/effect or whatever. Just mileage and experience tells me to stay away.

I'll take your word for it ......I use Shell gas 1/2 the time so maybe I'll just go there from now on. The only problem is , I live in a small town & when I commute to work at 5 in the morning, BP is the only gas station open that early in the morning. :head meets wall:

MOBIL only because it is just down the road from me and my buddy owns it. But if I had to seek out a gas station and did not factor in friendship or conveinence, then I would go with SUNOCO.

I've always used Chevron, so that's what I've been putting in my bike.

Gas... Man we had it nice here in NE FL because we had NO ethanol crap for a long time! Now Shell, Chevron, Hess, BP all have 10% ethanol and it makes you get 1-2 mpg less than straight Petrol while still costing the same.
The only ones left without 10% ethanol is Citgo (that is the crazy Venazuela guy Chavez) and Exxon. So it looks like Exxon is my new choice of gas after so many years of Chevron being the best for mpg on my vehicles.
We don't have any Mobil here and only about 2-4 Sunoco places in our city of nearly $1 million people...

I've heard that 87 octane is BEST to run in these machines. Is that true? If the fuel has 10-15% ethanol added, will that effect the bike performance? I just want to make sure I'm buying the right octane. I have been using 87 octane. Today I was out and had to fuel up at Shell, so I through a couple gallons of 87 in her.

I understand the whole argument about using the lowest octane possible and only going up to eliminate pinging issues... but I wonder...
My owner's manual says Minimum 91 octane. The bike came with a sticker by the filler that said, Minimum 91 Octane. So is Suzuki going to honor a warranty if you're running lower than 91?
Is the risk worth the (10 cents/gallon on 5 gallon fill) 50 cents per tank?

JACKSERIC....what year Busa do you have because mine is a 2005 and the manual and the sticker on the bike says 87 OCTANE minimum.
I also found out today that my buddies gas station is going to be changing to SUNOCO from Mobil which it is now. He said the change will go in affect at the begining of next week WOOOHOOO!!!!

Down here in the South, RaceTrac 91 octane almost exclusively. Ran it in the GT, ran it in the Lightning, and I run it in the Busa.

My bike is a 2008, so that would explain the difference...
Hmm, someone else with an '08 help me out here... it did say Minimum 90 or 91 octane, right? Or am I loosing my mind? I'm really second guessing myself, now.

Just looked it up in the manual, it says at least 90 octane, for the '08.

yes i posted that it says 90 octane minimun. and i will not run 87. in fact because of all the additives in gas mtbe etc.. the octane rating plummets in just a week in your tank. my two stroke racebike will not run on 91 now it needs to be mixed 50-50 with race gas to avoid pinging! the quality of gas is so poor now. i have been tempted to try the mix in my busa but it runs fine on "fresh" pump gas. if you smell something like a dirty rag from polishing with "mothers" metal polish coming from your tailpipe you would be smart to drain the gas run some fuel system cleaner with a tank of fresh and never let it go longer than 1 month in your tank. i read in dirtrider magazine that gas stored in a plastic container lasts only 1 week b4 the octane level dropped enough to effect performance. since i have been draining gas after weekend rides and races in my dirtbikes i have not clogged a pilot jet..something that was happening way to often.. changing one in your gear in 100 degree sun is a 13itch!

99-07 Busa's can use 87 all day long - especially if it has ethanol since ethanol has a rating of 110 so 10% will actually put the 87 up a point or two.
08 and up Busa's want 91 minimum octane which is understandable since they are 12.5 CR...:thumbs up:
