View Full Version : Rev Limiter Question

Years ago a buddy and I went down to Myrtle Beach for Hell Week. We met up with a group of about 30 bikes and cruised the strip for a while and had a blast. Something I've always wondered about, though... we pulled up at a light and next thing I know... nearly every bike there was throttled up, bouncing off the rev limiter. The sound was incredible... almost intimidating. A guy then told me that it doesn't hurt the bike because that 'rev limiter' kept the engine out of danger. Is that true, or were we all F'ing our bikes over? Do all bikes have these rev limiters?
Yeah, I expect to get flamed for this post, but I'd rather look like a dork and know the answer, than keep wondering...

I wouldn't make a habit of hitting the rev-limiter ......especially while not moving. You will definetly raise your chances of running hot. And no, not "all" bikes have them, although the majority do.

I think its a mating call ritual, young males do this to attract the opposite or same sex? we wont discriminate,

Thanks!
Hehe, no problem of not making it a habit either... I just passed the 500 mile mark last night and just then took it up to 7K rpm. I'm beginning to really get excited about the power of this bike...

Hahaha, well, I was gonna leave that part of the story out... I think we'd actually stopped in front of a club or something. There were around 10 or 15 young women all standing on the sidewalk cheering...
I'd say as a mating call... it must work pretty well.

it is a rev limiter not a valve float elimanator.. imo you are asking for valve train damage reving it like that with no load.. don't take this personal but everytime i see someone doing that i wanna take their keys and gouge their eyes out with them while yelling RETARD!!

:thumbs up:
Not taken personal at all... I guess I didn't make myself clear... I didn't do it, and I seriously doubt I ever would. That question of potential damage just haunts me every time I remember that day's events, or go past the local cruise spots and hear somebody doing it.

i think it's misleading to think the rev limiter will protect the engine when not in gear under load.. and the sound is like nails on a chalkboard. the power is cutting in and out at full throttle on a 197 hp engine.. might not break but why risk throwing valve timing off or damaging seats.. as for mating calls try waving a bag of coke around and watch the girls come clucking..just don't do any yourself and it's a win-win..:whistling:
