How much side play should a non-ball bearing turbo shaft have.? I noticed some oil smoke at idle that seems to come and go at times. off of idle no smoke. I noticed my oil level in the crankcase was high so i lowered it the normal level and so far no more smoke. anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, monte

without knowing what the specs are of your turbo , the side play should not be so much as to allow the turbine to touch the housing. the turbo should have some side play to allow for expansion when it reaches max operating temp.
are you measuring with a dial indicator or just by feel (hand) ?
yes sometimes oil level has an effect.
what kit are you running? is the oil return line pinched/kinked ?

he runs a hahn

it should have a little play as DA stated
the oil level should be same or close to same as stock
if you are a little high on your oil it will smoke some not alot but some

The side play is not enough to cause contact and the smoke is just at idle and only somtimes after a long ride but the duration is fairly short. Something i discovered today is that my crankcase vent might be restricted when i lower my tank and secure it. I re-routed it and so far no smoke. The bike runs great and the plugs look normal so i don't believe the problem is serious. I will keep you posted. Thanks for the replys.

Yes a pinched crankcase breather will make the bike smoke, you will build up excess crankcase pressure and then the oil will not drain from the turbo, I think you just found the problem yourself, good job!

side to side play doesnt really matter unless its really sloppy. what counts is in and out so if u grab the shaft can u push it in and pull it out. thats when your seals are gone if there is in and out play.

good luck.
